TWO DOLPHINS BORN IN AQUALAND |
Only three days had passed between both births in Aqualand Costa Adeje, located in Southern Tenerife, proving again the success of a reproduction programme which has become a reference across Europe.
The calves, a male and a female, are currently in the reproduction pool of Aqualand recovering well under the supervision of the Centre’s veterinary team, biologists and specialists of Aqualand. Births of dolphins take place under water and calves must reach the surface in order to breathe by their own means. Once they feel the air, they open their blowhole (equivalent to the human nostril) and a few hours later they start being fed. Those who have witnessed this moment describe it as incredibly exciting.
With these two calves the reproduction cycle at Aqualand Costa Adeje has been completed for the time being. There are now 15 dolphins in the Centre’s facilities. The factors behind the success, in terms of research and reproduction, are the strength of the social interaction among this group of dolphins and the excellent human team working at Aqualand. |
